Yesterday Peruvian president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) appointed former Minister of Culture Jorge Nieto as new Defense Minister to replace Mariano Gonzalez who resigned after a TV report revealed an intimate relationship with his personal adviser and criminal charges based on a conflict of interest were filed last week.
The new Defense Minister Jorge Nieto graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) as sociologist, has a magister in political science, a doctor in social science and was Peru’s Minister of Culture for the past 4 months. PPK however could convinced him to move to the Defense Ministry.
Jorge Nieto’s successor in the Culture Ministry is Salvador del Solar, a Peruvian lawyer, expert in international relations, actor and film director, who enters the pollical arena for the first time.
Both new ministers were sworn in by the Peruvian Head-of-State at the Government Palace in Lima. The ceremony was as well attended by Prime Minister Fernando Zavala, who is confident that the two new ministers can make major contributions to the cabinet, and other cabinet members.
