How many travelers visited Peru in 2018?

A small insight into the profile of foreign visitors

Over the past two decades Peru has seen an incredible increase in visitor numbers. And this trend continued in 2018.

According to the latest “Foreign tourist profile”- report published by PromPeru, a total of 4,198,051 travelers - 62% men and 38% women; 45% millennials (25 – 40 years) and 23% Generation X (41 – 54 years) - visited Peru in 2018; an increase of 10% compared to 2017 and of a staggering 39.7% in the last 5 years.

65% of foreigners visiting Peru (2,728,733) traveled to the country for vacation; an increase of 40% in the last 5 years. Compared to 2017 the number of travelers visiting Peru for business increased 27% and now make up 15% of all visitors (629,708) coming to the country.

Travelers stay on average 10 nights (6 median nights) in Peru and spend an average of US$ 932 during their visit.

Realized activities during stay in Peru

84% of foreign visitors engaged in some sort of cultural activity during their stay including city tours, visiting archeological sites, churches, historical buildings, museums and native communities.

Nature activities including visiting protected areas and reserves, bird, other animal and flower watching as well as walking along rivers, lagoons and waterfalls were done by 42% of foreign Peru visitors.

And Peru increasingly becomes popular with adventure seekers. 37% engaged in adventure activities including trekking, hiking and mountaineering, kayaking and canoeing as well as sand boarding and dune buggy driving.
