Pontifical Catholic University of Peru - Private university

Founded in 1907 by Catholic priest Father Jorge Dintilhac of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) - Pontifical Catholic University of Peru is a non-profit private higher education institution in Lima.

The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú defines itself as a plural and tolerant academic community, based on ethical, democratic and Catholic principles. Their essential foundations are based on academic rigor, a plurality of scientific and humanistic perspectives, Catholic values and ethical principles, a culture of discrepancy and tolerance, and a commitment with the development of Peru and its people. PUCP offers a humanistic, scientific and moral education.

Academic ranking of the PUCP

Academically the PUCP is considered one of the top 3 universities in Peru and generally is positioned alternatively as first or second on Peru university rankings. According to the QS Latin America University Rankings 2019 the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru is placed on position 21 in the region.

The university was as well awarded with the International Accreditation in categories of Institutional Management and Undergraduate Studies, Research and Graduate Teaching by the Instituto Internacional para el Aseguramiento de la Calidad (IAC) – International Institute of Quality Assurance – recognizing PUCP’s international institutional and academic standards.

Study Areas & Degree Levels

Officially accredited and recognized by the Peruvian Ministry of Education, PUCP offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized undergraduate and postgraduate degrees such as pre-bachelor’s degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorate degrees in several areas of study such as Arts & Humanities, Business & Social Science, Language & Cultural, Engineering and Science & Technology.

Language of conversation and instruction is Spanish.

Admission

The university has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations.

International students

International students are welcome to apply for enrollment either as exchange student from universities having a student exchange agreement with PUCP - students have to be selected and introduced by their home university - or as international visiting student - students must arrange admission, courses, payments, etc. directly with PUCP.

PUCP only offers courses in Spanish. Even though the university doesn’t request an official Spanish language certificate, it is necessary that students have an intermediate or advanced proficiency level to understand classes and assignments.

PUCP does not offer financial aids for international students.

Tuition

PUCP has a sophisticated system to determine the tuition for each student. Depending on selected courses, number of semester credits and the socio-economic situation of the student fees vary heavily. Generally speaking most students at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú pay anything between S/ 6,700 and S/ 20,000 (US$ 2000 – 6000) annually. Additionally costs for registration, materials, books and photocopies have to be covered.

Campus

The principal campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru is located on Av. Universitaria 1801 in San Miguel, Lima.

  • Instituto para la Calidad, Av. Dos de Mayo 935, San Isidro

Today more than 20,000 students are enrolled at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru from which about 800 are international students. Total faculty staff is more or less 2,000.
