Saint Rose of Lima - Santa Rosa de Lima

Saint Rose of Lima - Santa Rosa de Lima

The patron saint of Lima, Peru, the Americas and the Philippines has her own public holiday

30 August

Already in the 17th century Pope Clemente X designated August 30 to Saint Rose of Lima, the patron saint of Lima, Peru, the Americas and the Philippines. And still today, this day is a public holiday in Peru honoring the devoted and selfless patroness.

From an early age, Rosa was possessed with the veneration of God and disliked her beauty. She filled her days with praying, hard work, self-torture and helping the sick and poor of her community. Years of self-martyrdom ended in her death aged only 31. She became the first Saint of the New World.

You can find a detailed biography of Saint Rose of Lima in our article dedicated to her.

Celebrations in honor of Santa Rosa are most enthusiastic in Lima. Each year on August 30, a huge number of followers visit the Church and Sanctuary of Saint Rose in Lima, and thousands of faithful and worshippers take part in the religious celebrations and festivities in her honor. In the historic city center of Lima, a huge procession from the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo, where Santa Rosa found her last resting place, to the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas takes place.
