19 March

March 19 is Saint Joseph’s Day, the principal feast day of Saint Joseph, who is believed to have been a carpenter or craftsman in wood or even metal. In his memory countries around the globe pay homage to artisans and craftsmen on this day.

Since 2008 Peru celebrates on this day its nearly 73,000 in the National Artisan Register (RNA) inscribed and countless non-registered artisans and craftsmen with the Dia del Artesano Peruano, the Day of the Peruvian Artisan.

Artisans play an important role in Peru. Not only do they keep the heritage of numerous ancient civilizations and age-old traditions and customs alive, but using their hands and creativity produce timeless, modern folk art inspired by the rich Peruvian culture.

On and around the Peruvian Artisan Day there are countless activities across the country including exhibitions, art and craft fairs, lectures, artisanal workshops, award ceremonies where the best craftsmen and craftswomen in Peru are honored and tours to artisanal centers.
