Peru, and here especially the southern part of the country, is infected by the Dakar virus and off-road enthusiasts around the globe, who can’t be at the stages live, eagerly await the latest news and picture of the rally each day.

A great daily summary of all the action including scenes from the rally, interviews, background information and stunning pictures from Peru’s amazing landscapes is presented daily by Red Bull at 07.00 pm local time on their website. Hosts are Caroline de Moraes and Mike Chen.

Stage 1, 07.01. - Lima to Pisco

In the first stage competitors headed from Lima to Pisco on 246km road where 84km through the dunes on soft and unpredictable sand awaited the drivers in the first competitive stage.

Stage 2, 08.01. - Pisco to San Juan de Marcona

The second stage saw competitors run from Pisco to San Juan de Marcona: 342km of competitive stage followed by 210km of road.

And conditions got more difficult. It was extremely hot and windy and the first long stage through Peru’s tough dunes. The cars had to start the race, so navigators had their work cut out for them today.

Stage 3, 09.01. - San Juan de Marcona to Arequipa

It was a very long and really tough day. The 3rd stage started with 331km of competitive stage followed by a 467km transit stage. So, drivers had to conquer a total of 789km.

And what a conquest it was. The soft dunes and difficult terrain demanded everything from the drivers, navigators and vehicles which ended in drama for some teams. While a few just lost precious time getting lost or stuck or with minor vehicles problems, others such as Joan Barreda, leader in the bikes, and defending champion Carlos Sainz are out of the running.

Stage 4, 10.01. - Arequipa to Moquegua; Arequipa to Tacna

Todays was the first marathon stage. Bikes and quads headed from Arequipa to Moquegua while cars, SxS and trucks were off to Tacna.

Bikes and quads had to get through a 104km road stage and a 351km special stage, while the cars, SxS and trucks were 257km on the road and did the same 351km special stage.

Conditions today were much easier than yesterday: no dunes, just a little bit of sand, a fast track which was here and there hard on the tires.

Only limited servicing is available at the camp, so we'll see how drivers do tomorrow where a long stage is waiting.

Stage 5, 11.01. - Moquegua to Arequipa; Tacna to Arequipa

Day 2 of the Marathon stage and it was a long day with drivers having to get through over 700km.

The bikes and quads returned to Arequipa from Moquegua on 345km competitive stage and 429km road while the cars, SxS and trucks were on a different route back from Tacna on 194km road, 67km neutralization and a staggering 451km special stage.

Conditions overall were good, mostly hard track with a bit of tricky sand, and it was extremely dusty out there.

Rest day, 12.01 in Arequipa

As this was a rest day, no results for today. Enjoy the video with some interviews (In our video gallery at the end of this article).

Stage 6, 13.01. - Arequipa to San Juan de Marcona

5 stages down, 5 more to go. After the rest day yesterday in Arequipa the Dakar resumes and drivers and their vehicles are back on their way to Lima through Peru’s tricky sand dunes.

It was a long, hard day for everyone from Arequipa to San Juan de Marcona with 501km on road and 317 special stage to conquer for the bikes and quads and 500km on road and 290km competitive stage for the cars, SxS and trucks.

Stage 7, 14.01. - San Juan de Marcona to San Juan de Marcona

Competitors today ran on a loop stage starting and ending in San Juan de Marcona; only 63km of road and 323km of competitive stage. It was a long stage full of dunes, soft sand and lots of rocks.

Stage 8, 15.01. - San Juan de Marcona to Pisco

Today drivers were on their way from San Juan de Marcona to Pisco on 213km road and 360km special stage with lots of dunes and soft sand.

It was tough and dramatic stage, especially in the bike category. Overall leader Ricky Brabec is out of the race with an engine failure and Toby Price took over the overall lead.

But also the cars and trucks had a hard time reading the tricky dunes and getting through them; many got stuck and lots valuable time.

Stage 9, 16.01. - Pisco to Pisco

The last big stage of the Dakar 2019 today. Competitors were again on a loop course this time starting and ending in Pisco; 96km of road and 313km of competitive stage for all classes.

Overall it was a difficult stage and drivers had to conquer Peru’s unpredictable, hard to navigate dunes and soft sand.

Stage 10, 17.01. - Pisco to Lima

The last stage of the Dakar 2019 in Peru. Competitors today only had to conquer 112km of special stage and where then back on their way to Lima on 247km.

Overall winner Dakar 2019 in Peru

It was an amazing Dakar rally in Peru, probably the hardest in a long time. Drivers who managed Peru’s tricky sand dunes and soft sand best, in the end stayed a nose ahead of the competition.
