Yesterday afternoon Peru’s president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) arrived in Santiago de Chile for a 3 day visit and was greeted by Chiles Minister of Foreign Affairs Heraldo Muñoz. While relations between the two neighboring countries have been tense for decades, PPK wants to let the differences rest and rather focus on dialogue, understanding and cooperation as both nations share mutual interests and are important partners in a globalized world.

Before he left Peru, the Peruvian Head of State made clear that the goal of his visit is to enhance the relation with the southern neighbor and deepen bilateral ties between Chile and Peru. He told the press: ” I know we had significant tensions several years ago, a war, but this is over. Now we have to work together. That’s the reason I’m visiting Chile, an important investor for Peru as Peru is an important investor for Chile”.

When greeting PPK at the airport Heraldo Muñoz announced that he is happy to welcome the Peruvian president in Chile. According to him this visit opens a new stage in the relation of the two countries.

Last night, the Peruvian Head of State attended a colloquium-dinner organized by the Chilean Council on Foreign Relations. Today, after a working breakfast with the Young Professional Organization (YPO), a global network of young chief executives creating innovative projects, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Captain General Bernardo O’Higgins Monument, the Peruvian president got together with his counterpart, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet for a meeting and the signing of three bilateral agreements: an agreement to boost bilateral cooperation between the two nations, an extradition treaty and a human rights cooperation deal.

Later this afternoon PPK gives a speech at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) headquarters with the topic “Latin America amid Global Uncertainty: A View from Peru”.

On Wednesday Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) is back in Peru and plans to attend the Anual Executive Conference (CADE 2016) held in Paracas, Ica, Peru. The theme of this year’s CADE is “Challenge 2021 – The opportunity is now” and representatives from the public sector and business organizations will discuss how to achieve the 6 main goals of the Peruvian government within the next 5 years.
