Later this afternoon the educator Marilú Martens is sworn in as new Peruvian Education Minister replacing the economist Jaime Saavedra.

Saavedra was sacked earlier this week after the Peruvian congress, controlled by the opposition Popular Force party under Keiko Fujimori, voted to censure him on corruption allegations relating to the purchase of computers worth millions of Dollars and the delayed construction progress for the 2019 Pan American Games facilities in Lima.

While the impeachment of Jaime Saavedra was heavily criticized and seen as act of revenge from Keiko Fujimori, who lost the presidential elections 2016 to Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, or an attempt to stop a university reform ensuring higher academic standards, the mounting political pressure on the Peruvian president resulted in letting go of Saavedra.

The new Education Minister Marilú Martens works in the Education Ministry since 2014 and until today was the General Director of Specialized Educational Service.

She is an educator by profession and has a master’s degree in pedagogy from the Andres Bello National University in Chile as well as Harvard degrees in teaching and training of teachers. Among other activities, Marilú Martens was the first general and academic director of the "President of Peru" high school, a state educational institution located in Huampaní that brings together children from all over Peru with the best academic performance.

She as well was the director of the Alianza Educativa de Avanzada Association and the vice chancellor for innovation and quality of the University of Sciences and Arts of Latin America. She still is a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Strategic Education Committee of IPAE and Director of CAFAE-SE.
