Bribery declared criminal offence in Peru

Prison time for bribers and bribed

For years it has been common practice in Peru to straighten out minor traffic violations, all sorts of other offences or even more serious crimes with paying the police officer in charge either the right amount of money, presenting an appropriate gift or offering any other suitable benefit.

It seems that those days are over now. With the declared goal to fight corruption in Peru on all levels, the Peruvian government sends a clear signal now and modified the Penal Code making bribery a criminal offence. Those convicted of bribery will face imprisonment of 4 to 10 years in the future.

Everyone in Peru that in any manner offers, gives or promises a Peruvian police officer a bribe, be it money, gifts, any kind of advantage or benefit, in order to make him / her forget his / her duty may be punished with a prison sentence between 4 and 8 years.

Drivers only trying to bribe a police officer to avoid a ticket for their traffic violation can lose their drivers licenses and may never again be allowed to make a new one.

And corrupt Peruvian police officers aren’t exempted from facing serious consequences for their actions. Police officers who receive or accept a bribe, promise, advantage or benefit to look the other way and don’t carry out their duty may be punished with a prison sentence between 5 and 10 years. If an officer directly or indirectly asks for any kind of bribe he may face 6 to 10 years in prison.

Whether this law will be really enforced or not, please don’t support and fuel corruption in Peru – rather take responsibility for your actions and bear the consequences.
