Rural poverty in Peru to be reduced with agricultural projects

Ministry of Agriculture aims at halving rural poverty

Over the past decade poverty could be reduced significantly in Peru. According to a recent press release from INEI, Peru’s National Institute of Statistic, 20.7% of Peruvians were considered poor in 2016; that are about 6.5 million people living from S/ 328 or less (about US$ 100) per month.

While poverty in all regions - coast, highlands and jungle, urban and rural, decreased in 2016 a few percentage points, the numbers for poverty in rural Peruvian areas still cause concern. Even though poverty could be nearly cut by half over the past decade (79.3% rural poverty in 2006), overall today still 43.8% of people living in rural regions are poor; in the rural Peruvian highlands even 47.8%.

With the goal to halve these numbers once more the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture (Minagri) announced to introduce 25 development projects worth US$ 57 million in the agricultural sector that aim at improving the economic conditions of peasant farmers in rural areas.

With the help of international cooperatives and agencies the to be implemented projects focus on water management, technical support, pest control, food security and on connecting small farmers in rural areas with (international) markets.
