For years the “Ruraq Maki, hecho a mano” art & crafts fair is the most popular and largest (sales) exhibitions of original handmade and indigenous Peruvian handicrafts and folk art. For those that can’t make it there, the lovely Ruraq Maki e-shop - online now for the past year – might be a great way to purchase true Peruvian traditional craftsmanship from the comfort of home.

Ruraq Maki is one of the largest government programs initiated by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture in collaboration with its Directorate of Intangible Heritage, the National Museum of Peruvian Culture, the Qhapaq Ñan Project and the Decentralized Directorates of Culture.

It not only registers and researches traditional folk art, but as well supports Peruvian folk artists throughout the country in the preservation of their traditional and ancestral craftsmanship, in the promotion of their cultural heritage and in the commercialization of their art.

While already the “Ruraq Maki, hecho a mano” art & crafts fairs, held in Lima usually in July for Fiestas Patrias and before Christmas, allow local artists to bring their original handmade works to a larger audience generating some much-needed income, the creation of an online marketplace goes a step further opening the world to Peruvian folk artists.

Today the “Ruraq Maki tiendas virtuales” consist of 18 groups of local artists - many of them belonging to indigenous and rural communities - offering online shoppers a wide range of traditional handicrafts and artwork including basketry, carved wooden and stone pieces, textiles, ceramics, jewelry. silverware, paintings, decorations and many other beautiful items.

And the good thing most of the items not only ship within Peru, but as well to other countries on the American continent including the US and Canada as well as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay.

So, if you are looking for original handmade and indigenous Peruvian handicrafts and folk art or a lovely gift from Peru, check out the Ruraq Maki online shop.
