For years visiting Machu Picchu was the main reason most travelers came to Peru. Slowly, but surely this is changing and other gems the country has to offer gain popularity and international recognition. One of them is the walled city of Kuelap.

Earlier this week during a ceremony at the legendary Mayfair Hotel in London the "lost" city high up in the cloud forest of the Amazonian Andes received one of the coveted National Geographic Traveler Reader Awards and was awarded “Best Overseas Attraction 2017” in the category Far & Away.

National Geographic Traveler Reader Awards honor the best places, experiences, hotels, operators, attractions, media and more, which are preselected by NatGeo Traveler’s judges and voted for by the readers of the magazine. So Kuelap stood high with voting readers and prevailed against competing attractions such as the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, France, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, United States.

Thanks to an increased promotion of Kuelap, a better accessibility by plane and of course the new cable car system with which rapid and direct access to the fortress is available to visitors, the lost city of Kuelap gained attention and an increasing popularity over the past year. Next to above mentioned “Best Overseas Attraction”, Kuelap as well was named one of the “Most Cool” destinations by The Wall Street Journal in its latest list of the best destinations to visit in 2018 and was featured in many recent Peru documentaries such as “Peru – The Hidden Treasure”.
