Lima’s airport only 3rd best in South America

Jorge Chavez International Airport loses air passengers’ affection

For years Jorge Chavez International Airport in Callao, Lima’s gateway to the world and the interior of the country, set standards for air travel in South America and was extremely popular with air passengers.

From 2009 to 2015 Lima's airport received 7 years in a row the Skytrax “Best Airport Award in South America”, better known as "South America's Passengers Choice Award", and was rewarded with numerous other accolades. These times seem to be over.

In 2016, the shock was already big, when Lima’s Airport was pushed from the throne of airport excellence and El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia received the prestigious “Best Airport in South America Award 2016”.

And this year it’s even worse. Not only did the Jorge Chavez International Airport drop 6 positions in the global ranking (from 49th to 55th), it as well forfeited yet another position in the South America ranking and only comes in third behind El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia and Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador.

What is the Skytrax Airport Award?

By the way, the Skytrax Airport Award, also known as the Passengers Choice Award, isn’t just a nice prize awarded by some committee. It is actually based on the largest, most respected, global airport customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax, the most renowned international air transport rating organization.

In 2017, 13.82 million air travelers from 105 different nationalities participated in the study. The survey operated from July 2016 to February 2017, covering 550 airports worldwide and evaluating traveler experiences related to different airport services and airport staff performances - from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration through to departure at the gate.
