It is increasingly common to find fake websites, social network pages from recognized brands and Peruvian banking institutions. The well elaborated mock-up pages offer special discounts or campaigns with no other purpose than to fool the users in realizing purchases or transactions by providing their banking details and personal credentials on the internet.

This form of cyber-crime is known as "phishing"

Kaspersky Lab, the global cybersecurity company, revealed in a report that the numbers of users attacked by this type of technique increased by 22.49% in 2016 (in comparison to 2015). The highest numbers of attacks were recorded during Black Friday, Cyber Monday and obviously during the Christmas season. The exact numbers for Peru are not known, but an increased number of complaints by the affected consumers have been registered with the local authorities.

Phishing is the most common practice that these criminals use to commit fraud. As we mentioned at the beginning, it consists of creating false pages of institutions for the purpose of theft of credentials. The pages that represent the highest risks for frauds are mostly related to banking, gaming, social networks and online shops.

Due to the implementation of improved infrastructure and technical development, more and more consumers in Peru realize their transactions and purchases online adapting to the available digital products. A new type of criminals are now operating in the Peruvian cyberspace and at the same time a migration from physical crime to cyber-crime can be observed.
