Update – Rain and flooding in Peru

Now that the worst rains and floodings seem to be over, the tense situation in Peru slowly calms down and the impact and extent of the damages caused by the unusually extreme weather conditions become evident.

Today the National Emergency Operation Center, COEN, published their newest report with updated information on the damages as of March 30, 2017.

Damage to persons

  • 98 persons lost their life
  • 351 persons have been injured
  • 20 persons are still missing
  • 133,097 persons lost all their worldly goods and are homeless
  • 895,489 persons have been affected by the disaster and suffer from damages to their homes

Damage to buildings

  • 17,004 homes are completely destroyed
  • 15,631 houses have been declared uninhabitable
  • 198,220 buildings are damaged

Damage to roads

  • 2,625 km of road are completely destroyed
  • 5,856 km of road are damaged

Damage to bridges

  • 242 bridges collapsed
  • 397 bridges are damaged

Damage to schools

  • 43 schools are destroyed
  • 102 schools are not usable due to risk of collapse
  • 1,577 schools are damaged

Damage to hospitals

  • 13 hospitals are destroyed
  • 25 hospitals are at risk of collapse
  • 567 hospitals and health center suffered damages

Damage to agricultural land and exports

  • only in the northern regions of Peru about 32,000 ha agricultural lands suffered from too much rain and flodding and affected, damaged or destroyed crops; from these 15,500 ha are a complete loss.
  • according to current estimates the financial damage in the agricultural sector amounts to about S/ 850 million (US$ 262 millions)
  • tons of fresh fruits spoil in the growing regions as they can't be shipped due to damaged and blocked roads.
