In the first quarter of 2017 Peru saw some extreme weather conditions with heavy rains, extensive flooding and dangerous flash floods throughout most parts of the country.

And while the worst is over and the press coverage died down, support and aid for the victims continue, the reconstruction of the affected areas has started and only now the whole extent of the catastrophe becomes apparent.

Having assessed 95% of the damages left by the coastal El Niño, Peru’s National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) informed recently that 158 people lost their life due to the rains and flooding.

293, 071 people were severely affected by the disaster, meaning they lost all their worldly possessions and are (were) homeless.

Additionally, 1,372,360 people were affected, meaning they suffer(ed) from damages and are (were) in need of immediate help.
