For years there is not much positive to say about the Peruvian education system: schools in desolate condition that miss even the basic infrastructure and proper equipment with student performing extremely poor in studies such as PISA. But now there is at least a glimmer of hope.

Just recently Quacquarelli Symonds, a globally operating company specializing in education and study abroad that publishes among others one of the most influential university rankings in the world, released their 2017 “QS Best Student Cities Index” which showcases this year the 100 best urban destinations for international students; and Lima, the Peruvian capital, made it on the list.

The participating cities are evaluated in 6 categories: university rankings, student mix, desirability, employer activity, affordability and student view. To be considered to be included, a city must have over 250,000 citizens and at least two universities in the most recent “QS World University Rankings”.

Montreal (Canada), Paris (France), London (United Kingdom), Seoul (South Korea), Melbourne (Australia), Berlin (Germany), Tokyo (Japan), Boston (USA), Munich (Germany) and Vancouver (Canada) are the Top 10 on the 2017 “QS Best Student Cities Index”.

The best destinations for international students in Latin America are Buenos Aires (Argentina) on position 42, Santiago (Chile) on 62 and Sao Paulo (Brazil) on place 69; and for the first time ever Lima appears on the 2017 “QS Best Student Cities Index” as well; on position 99.

So it seems that the efforts to improve the quality of the university system are slowly bearing their first fruit. And according to Lorena Masías, the head of Sunedu (the national supervisory body of higher university education), here especially the development of the National University of San Marcos, the Catholic University of Peru and the Cayetano Heredia University have contributed to positioning Lima as an ideal city to pursue university studies.
