How many foreigners live in Peru?

INEI informs about the number, country of origin, immigration status and profession of foreign residents in the country

Using data from the Peruvian immigration authority, Peru’s National Institute of Statistics (INEI) informed in its latest press release about how many foreign residents live in Peru, which countries they are originally coming from and what type of legal immigration status they have in the country.

Number and country of origin of foreign residents in Peru

In 2016, a total of 103,854 foreigners - 61% men and 39% women - lived in Peru. From these

  • 13.4% are from Colombia (13,916)
  • 10.2% from Spain (10,593)
  • 8.9% from the United States (9,243)
  • 7.5% from Argentina (7,789)
  • 6.6% from Ecuador (6,854)
  • 6.4% from Venezuela (6,647)
  • 6.3% from Chile (6,543)
  • 5.7% from Brazil (5,920)
  • 4.9% from China (5,089)
  • 4.5% from Bolivia (4,673)
  • 2.8% from Mexico (2,908)
  • 2.5% from Italy (2,596)
  • 2.0% from France (2,077)
  • 1.6% from Germany (1,662)
  • and 16.7% from other countries (17,344)

Immigration status of foreigners in Peru

According to the information provided by INEI

  • 44.5% of foreigners living legally in Peru have a work visa
  • 28.7% have a family visa
  • 9.1% have an immigrant visa
  • 8.1% have a religious visa
  • 3.6% have a designated worker visa (meaning they are send from a company overseas to work in Peru)
  • 2.3% have a student visa
  • 0.8% have an investor visa
  • 0.6% have a retirement visa
  • and 2.3% have other resident visas

Professions of foreign residents in Peru

In the third quarter of 2016, 46.1% of foreign residents in the country were specialists in their field, scientists and intellectuals – from these 25.8% were engineers, 19.7% missionaries, 8.5% business managers, 4.8% teachers, 3.6% managers, 2.3% accountants and 2.2% economists.

12.3% of foreign residents in the third quarter of 2016 were office workers and 7.6% students, part-time professional technicians and employees in the sales or service sector.
