The House of Peruvian Literature

With the exhibition “Ojo, pare, cruce, tren. Historia y Literatura del Ferrocarril Central” (Look out, stop, cross, train. The history and literature of the central railway) the House of Peruvian Literature pays homage to the original purpose of the building it occupies.

The building that is home to the Casa de la Literatura only since October 2009, was originally Lima's main train station (Estacion de Desamparados). Situated behind the Presidential Palace at the River Rimac it was inaugurated in 1912 and became a symbol for the progress and development of the city in the beginning of the 20th century; a place to meet and move in a new modern Lima, to arrive from or leave for central Peru.

So it seems only appropriate that the House of Literature celebrates its 7th anniversary with an exhibition about the train station and the amazing Peruvian railway history which is greatly connected to the advances and development of the Peruvian nation at this time.

The exposition tells the story of Peru’s great train station by displaying all sorts of documents such as travel itineraries, train tickets and receipts, as well as coins, newspaper articles about the inauguration and photographs from the early 20th century up to today. Additionally, various books about the Peruvian railway history and a photographic intervention of the visual artist Marco Sueño are exhibited. A video with interviews of former passengers and railroad workers is presented.

The inauguration of the exhibition takes place this Thursday, October 20th at 07.00 pm at the Casa de la Literatura Peruana, Jr. Áncash 207, Lima city center. From Friday on until February 2017 the exhibition can be visited Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 am to 07.00 pm. The entrance is free.
